Sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder, is characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep which usually last ten seconds or more. An oral dental appliance intends to treat apnea by keeping the airway open in one of three ways: by pushing the lower jaw forward, by preventing the tongue from falling back over the airway or a combination of both mechanisms.
